ASVAB Score Calculator: How to Calculate Your AFQT Score
Trying to figure out your ASVAB score? Whether you're estimating from practice tests or understanding your official results, here's exactly how the scoring works.
Quick AFQT Formula
Your AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) score comes from four sections:
AFQT = AR + MK + (2 x VE)
Where:
- AR = Arithmetic Reasoning raw score
- MK = Mathematics Knowledge raw score
- VE = Verbal Expression (Word Knowledge + Paragraph Comprehension combined and scaled)
This raw score then gets converted to a percentile (1-99) based on a reference population.
Understanding the Numbers
What's a Raw Score?
Your raw score is simply how many questions you got right. Each section has a different number of questions:
| Section | Questions | Time |
| Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) | 16 | 39 min |
| Mathematics Knowledge (MK) | 16 | 20 min |
| Word Knowledge (WK) | 16 | 8 min |
| Paragraph Comprehension (PC) | 11 | 22 min |
What's the VE Score?
Verbal Expression (VE) combines your Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension scores. The military uses a conversion table to turn your raw WK and PC scores into a VE score from 20-62.
The VE score counts twice in the AFQT formula, which means:
Verbal skills matter. A lot.
What's a Percentile?
Your final AFQT score (1-99) is a percentile, not a percentage.
- AFQT of 70 means you scored higher than 70% of test-takers
- AFQT of 50 is perfectly average
- AFQT of 99 means you're in the top 1%
The conversion from raw scores to percentiles is based on a 1997 study of 12,000 people. Your score compares to that population.
Estimate Your Score
Here's a rough guide to estimate your AFQT from practice tests:
If You Score (% Correct on Practice Test):
| AR | MK | WK | PC | Estimated AFQT |
| 50% | 50% | 50% | 50% | ~35-45 | |||
| 60% | 60% | 60% | 60% | ~50-60 | |||
| 70% | 70% | 70% | 70% | ~65-75 | |||
| 80% | 80% | 80% | 80% | ~80-90 | |||
| 90% | 90% | 90% | 90% | ~95+ | These are estimates. Actual AFQT depends on the specific questions and official conversion tables. Line Scores: The Other NumbersBeyond AFQT, you'll get "line scores" that determine job eligibility. Different branches calculate these differently. Army Line Scores | Line Score | Sections Used |
|---|
| CL (Clerical) | VE + AR + MK |
| CO (Combat) | VE + AR + AS + MC |
| EL (Electronics) | GS + AR + MK + EI |
| FA (Field Artillery) | AR + MK + MC |
| GM (General Maintenance) | GS + AS + MK + EI |
| GT (General Technical) | VE + AR |
| MM (Mechanical Maintenance) | AS + MC + EI |
| OF (Operators & Food) | VE + AS + MC |
| SC (Surveillance & Communications) | VE + AR + AS + MC |
| ST (Skilled Technical) | VE + GS + MK + MC |
Navy/Marines Line Scores
The Navy and Marines use different composites:
- GT (General Technical)
- EL (Electronics)
- BEE (Basic Electricity & Electronics)
- ENG (Engineering)
- MK (Mechanical)
- And more...
Air Force MAGE Scores
The Air Force uses four main composites:
- M (Mechanical) = GS + MC + 2xAS
- A (Administrative) = VE + MK
- G (General) = VE + AR
- E (Electronics) = GS + AR + MK + EI
Section Key
Here's what each section abbreviation means:
| Code | Section |
| AR | Arithmetic Reasoning | ||||
| MK | Mathematics Knowledge | ||||
| WK | Word Knowledge | ||||
| PC | Paragraph Comprehension | ||||
| VE | Verbal Expression (WK + PC) | ||||
| GS | General Science | ||||
| EI | Electronics Information | ||||
| AS | Auto & Shop Information | ||||
| MC | Mechanical Comprehension | ||||
| AO | Assembling Objects | What Score Do You Need?For Enlistment (AFQT Minimums) | Branch | Minimum | Preferred |
|---|
| Army | 31 | 50+ |
| Navy | 31 | 50+ |
| Marines | 32 | 50+ |
| Air Force | 36 | 50+ |
| Coast Guard | 40 | 50+ |
| Space Force | 36 | 65+ |
For Specific Jobs
Each military job (MOS, Rate, AFSC) has specific line score requirements. High-demand jobs like:
- Combat Medic (Army 68W): ST 101+, GT 107+
- Navy Nuclear (Nuke): AR+MK+EI+GS = 252+ (with individual minimums)
- Air Force Cyber: G 64+
- Marine Corps Intel: GT 110+
The higher your scores, the more options you have.
How to Improve Your Score
Focus on AFQT Sections First
Since only four sections count for AFQT, prioritize: 1. Arithmetic Reasoning 2. Mathematics Knowledge 3. Word Knowledge 4. Paragraph Comprehension
Boost Your Verbal (VE) Score
VE counts double in the formula. Improving vocabulary and reading comprehension gives you the biggest AFQT boost.
Quick wins:
- Learn 10 vocabulary words per day
- Practice reading passages under time pressure
- Study word roots (prefixes, suffixes)
Don't Neglect Math
AR and MK together count as much as VE. Make sure you can:
- Solve word problems
- Work with fractions, decimals, percentages
- Handle basic algebra
- Apply geometry formulas
Use a Practice Test to Calculate
The most accurate way to estimate your score is taking a full-length practice test that mimics real ASVAB conditions.
A good practice test will:
- Have the same number of questions per section
- Enforce time limits
- Calculate your estimated AFQT
- Show section-by-section breakdown
