Algebra Fundamentals
Build a strong foundation in algebraic concepts including variables, equations, expressions, and solving for unknowns.
Variables, Expressions & Equations
Algebra is about using letters (variables) to represent unknown numbers and then solving for them. An expression is a combination of numbers, variables, and operations (like 3x + 5). An equation says that two expressions are equal (like 3x + 5 = 20). The variable is what we're trying to find.
Think of an equation like a balanced scale. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other side to keep it balanced. If you add 5 to the left side, you add 5 to the right side. If you divide one side by 2, you divide the other side by 2. This principle—performing the same operation on both sides—is the foundation of solving equations.
On the ASVAB, algebra problems often come as word problems. You need to translate words into an equation, solve it, and find the answer. Mastering the basic rules makes this process simple and systematic.
Variable
A letter (usually x, y, or z) that represents an unknown number in an algebraic expression or equation
